Summary of Today's Session of the Georgia General Assembly


Today was day 1 of the 40-day legislative session. Thirty-nine days remain. Highlights included:
  • Swearing-in of House and Senate members

  • Re-Election of House Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram) by a vote of 113-67. Senate President Pro Tempore Eric Johnson (R-Savannah) was re-elected by unanimous vote.

  • Both chambers approved a new rules package and other housekeeping measures including a House rule banning members from talking on cell phones in the chamber.

  • Gov. Sonny Perdue, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and the state's other constitutional officers were sworn in at Philips Arena.
